Howard Levy, MD, PhD, MMM
Since December 2008, Dr. Levy has served as the Chief Scientific Officer at Sangart, Inc., in San Diego, CA. Dr. Levy is responsible for the discovery, preclinical development and clinical studies leading to the registration of Hemospan (MalPEG-hemoglobin) a hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier, and other successor compounds.
Prior to Sangart, Dr. Levy was employed by Novo Nordisk Inc in Princeton, New Jersey from February 2006 to November 2008, and was responsible for clinical research of the hemostasis platform, inflammation/oncology, growth hormone and hormone therapy for menopause.
Dr. Levy is a critical care and pulmonary physician and served as Chief of Critical Care Medicine, Medical Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit and head of the Critical Care training program at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico from 1989 through 2000.
In 2000, Dr. Levy was a Clinical Research Physician and Medical Director Acute Care in the U.S. Medical Division of Eli Lilly with responsibility for the Xigris, ReoPro and prasugrel teams and activities involving severe sepsis and cardiovascular disease.
Over the past 18 years, Dr Levy has participated in clinical research as a principal investigator for studies of new pharmaceutical agents for severe sepsis, Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), pancreatitis, serious infections, burns and deep venous thrombosis prevention studies. He has assisted both pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms in the design, monitoring and interpretation of research studies. He is a leading authority on the diagnosis and treatment of the frequently fatal, Hantavirus Cardiopulmonary Syndrome. He served as Chairman of the Human Research Review Committee at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Dr. Levy was a Principal Investigator and member of the Clinical Evaluation Committee of the successful PROWESS (Protein C Worldwide Evaluation in Severe Sepsis) trial., Dr. Levy was awarded a B.Sc in Anatomy and Physiology at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa in 1975 and MB BCh (Doctor of Medicine equivalent) in 1978. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine in South Africa at the Johannesburg Hospital in 1985. In 1989, Dr. Levy completed a Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship at the City of Hope/Veterans Administration Long Beach/University of Irvine. He obtained his Ph D with thesis title “Aspects of Pulmonary Tuberculosis” from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1996 and obtained a MMM (Masters in Medical Management) at Carnegie-Mellon in 2001.
He has been recognized with a number of awards, is a contributing author, consultant, and manuscript reviewer to several publications and is a widely published author of medical articles. Professional memberships and fellowships include the American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST) for which he served as Governor of the Society of Critical Care Medicine for the State of New Mexico. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and in Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine, and is a Certified Physician Executive. He is licensed to practice in New Mexico.
Dr Levy was honored by nomination and election as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in May 2002, and election to the International Health Expert Committee of the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) for 2005-2010.
