He became fully specialized in internal medicine in 1978 and now participates in clinical, research and teaching activities. Dr. Vincent is Head of the Department of Intensive Care at the Erasme University Hospital in Brussels. His main fields of investigations are severe sepsis, acute circulatory failure (circulatory shock) and its treatment, oxygen transport, hemodynamic monitoring and vital emergencies. For over 20 years, he has organized an international symposium on intensive care and emergency medicine, which is held every March in Brussels. The symposium attracts around 5,000 participants a year and has become one of the largest meetings in the field. Dr. Vincent has authored more than 580 original articles (480 in English, 100 in French), more than 220 book chapters and review articles, and 660 original abstracts. He has published 70 books, including 59 in his own series, Update in Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine and Yearbook in Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine, published by Springer-Verlag (Heidelberg, Berlin, New York). He has also written a French Manual of Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (Springer, France) and is the co-editor of the series Le point sur… (Springer, France). Dr. Vincent is the Editor-in-Chief of Critical Care, Current Opinion in Critical Care and ICU Management, and member of the editorial boards of 30 international journals, including Critical Care Medicine (Senior Editor), Intensive Care Medicine, Lancet Infectious Diseases, Chest, Shock, Journal of Critical Care, Clinical Intensive Care, International Journal of Intensive Care, Intensive Care World, Sepsis and Journal Européen des Urgences (JEUR). Dr. Vincent is a past President of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine and the European Shock Society, and the current Chairman of the International Sepsis Forum. He received the Foundation André Loicq award in 1986, the Foundation De Kerckheer award in 2000, the Distinguished Investigator award of the Society of Critical Care Medicine in 2001, and the College Medalist Award of the American College of Chest Physicians in 2003. ![]() |
