Toshio Asano, PhD, Director

Dr. Asano is the Senior Executive Officer and Board Member of Asahi Kasei Pharma Corporation, the pharmaceutical and healthcare business unit of one of Japan’s leading chemical companies, Asahi Kasei Corporation. Dr. Asano’s background is in research and development, and he has served in nearly every leadership position in that area in his 34-year tenure at Asahi.

Dr. Asano has also been recognized in Japan for his role in drug development. He has received industry awards in Japan including the 2006 Drug Discovery Award from the Japan Pharmaceutical Society and the 1997 29th Technology & Science Award from the Japan Chemical Industry Association.

From 1992 to 2008, Dr. Asano contributed to the pursuit of academic excellence in the pharmaceutical field as a Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Shizuoka University.

Being extensively published worldwide, Dr. Asano is also active in conducting peer reviews.

In addition to serving on the board of Asahi Kasei Pharma, Dr. Asano has been a board director for the Japan Health and Science Foundation since 2006, a board observer for Artisan since its formation and a director proper since early 2009, and is also a member of the Managing Committee for the Japan Bioindustry Association.

Dr. Asano received both his Bachelor of Science and his Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Science from Tokyo University. He is also a licensed pharmacist.
